The Reader’s Edition

Being Able to Live — Reader’s Edition
Before, During, and After a Death
By Torrance K. Jackson

Some of the most useful things we can leave our families are things only we can explain: a final wish, the story behind a photograph, or where to find an important document.

In Being Able to Live — Reader’s Edition, fifth-generation funeral director Torrance K. Jackson explores the conversations and practical preparation that can help families before, during, and after a death.

Through real experiences, thoughtful reflection, and clear next steps, Jackson considers personal stories, legacy, final wishes, important information, financial preparation, and finding a way forward after loss. “Do This While You’re Here” prompts throughout the book encourage readers to turn reflection into meaningful action.

This edition presents the ideas behind preparation in a readable narrative format. It can be enjoyed on its own or used alongside the Planning Guide to help you put those ideas into practice.

Whether you are preparing for yourself, helping someone you love, or facing a recent loss, these pages offer a practical place to begin—and an invitation to give greater attention to life while you are here.

About Torrance

Torrance K. Jackson's work in life, death, and legacy comes from a lifetime spent serving families. As a fifth-generation funeral director in his family's century-long funeral service legacy, Torrance has witnessed what families experience when important conversations happen—and what can happen when they don't.
Again and again, he has seen families face difficult decisions while trying to grieve, remember, and understand wishes. Those experiences helped shape Being Able to Live.
His message is simple: preparation isn't only about what happens at the end of life. It's about having conversations, preserving stories, sharing what matters, and making thoughtful decisions while we still have the opportunity.

"Don't save every meaningful word for a funeral."
